Historically the correct spelling of the name was Berkeley, and the correct spelling /ˈbɑɹkli/.

Though the ages the pronunciation of the surname Berkeley became colloquially neo-Anglic and lost its Scots and Northern English nature. The version Barkley maintains the archaic pronunciation but not the spelling. Some US professors and many people in the Northern UK still pronounce the name Berkeley as /ˈbɑɹkli/, but now it's statistically rare.
