A google search of "Die Bommel von der Mütze" (which can be nominative or accusative) returns 100 hits. "Den Bommel von der Mütze" (which is accusative only) returns 107 hits. If you leave out the "von" (more formal style) the feminine gets 334, and the masculine 155. This altogether confirms my personal feeling that the masculine gender is just as common as the feminine. Since both are also accepted by the Duden, I've treated them as equal alternatives.
