There is a fairly popular street theory that the word derives from the Latin words "Calor" and "Fornia", meaning "hot sex". The Latin seems more or less correct, but I was wondering if that is the accurate etymology.

California was named for Queen w:Califia. The Spanish Roman Catholic priests and explorers were not really in the habit of naming places for hot sex. —Stephen 02:45, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
