Bread

[edit]

My mother, who was born of German parents who immigrated to the USA after WW1, called the "heel" of a loaf of bread the "kanouse." I always thought that it was spelled "canoose" like the caboose at the end of a train. Apparently this word is not unique to my mother, see https://m.facebook.com/BentButNotBreaking/photos/what-the-hell-do-you-call-this-piece-at-the-end-of-a-bread-loaf-the-internet-is-/1210147006107552/

From the entry for Knauss: "Knauss is a German surname, known from at least 1515. The earliest people recorded with this name appear to be from southern Germany. The meaning is very unclear but may mean "haughty person." Other suggested sources have included a sharp strike (hit), a beard, the crust of a loaf of bread, or a small hill." Wastrel Way (talk) Eric
