A Messe can also stand synonymously for church service or, in a few cases, worship; i. e. the religious ceremonies that usually happen regularly every Sunday in Germany. It might be restricted to some bundeslander, though. Especially in rural regions you might find brown-ish signs at the road 9.30: Messe with a church symbol.
