Niderlandy vel Holandia

[edit]

marked Niderlandy - "the Kingdom of the Netherlands" as archaic - same as Polish wiktionary.

The word itself was used in that context before the end of United Kingdom of Netherlands after that fallen out of use and to 2020 considered archaic.

Around that time Polish media parroted English with Holland->Netherlands.

Even some dictionaries added the term... and it did not catch up (and then dictionaries removed it).

This is not descriptive vs prescriptive - its: (media prescriptive clickbait, "knowledgeable" prescriptive or just archaism) vs (state prescriptive and descriptive) term.

If anything here is "prescriptive vs descriptive" it is "język niderlandzki" - even though "język holenderski" is still preferred by Poles over it prescriptive version (per Google trends around 5:6 nid. to hol.) some people still try to downplay it use and make it 'mistake'.

Also removed English double meaning which does not match to this word - the European part of Netherlands is still "Holandia" in Polish (no matter Niderlandy usage).~ Wiedzosław (talk) 12:00, 27 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Wiedzosław A lot of media is prescribing it, however, there is also the fact that a definite group of people use the term in that way, and according to en.wikt's WT:CFI that would still pass. Vininn126 (talk) 12:08, 27 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
