I've found alternate definitions for this term. In some cases, it's defined as the rate of CO2 production in the body, in other cases, it's defined as the rate of CO2 elimination in the alveoli. I can understand why they'd be intimately connected, but one would determine the PCO2 in venous blood, while the other would help determine PCO2 in arterial blood.
