I thought the derivation of ack-ack was from the sound of rapidly firing guns. Ben 11:08, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Date of formation of the RAF.[edit]

The RAF was only formed on 1st Apr 1918.

AFAIK, the phonetic alphabet was in use before then and used by the military generally, so the reference to “RAF” is in question.

- Ack was in use by the military until the start of the 2nd world war and wasn't completely replaced until the adoption of the Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet in 1956 wikipedia entry 2A00:23C7:301E:5101:E6E0:7524:EC86:D773 00:59, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
