Recent meaning[edit]

The word "amid" is now used by the media to mean "during" giving it a temporal meaning instead of a spatial one. The word was frequently used this way during 2020-2021 with reference to the COVID epidemic: "amid the pandemic." Today I saw it used "Austin Mayor Steve Adler hit with ethics complaints amid last days in office" in this article. This usage is deplorable and may lead to sentences such as "Amid my swim, I was amid fishes" being acceptable English. Wastrel Way (talk) Eric
