- The only ancient Germanic languages to have a word corresponding to be- + "sleep" are Old English and Old Frisian. It's possible a word with this construction may have also existed in Old High German, Old Saxon, and Old Dutch, and was simply not recorded... yet in cases where we cannot be sure, and where it's unlikely to have been inherited, I think using noncog is appropriate. - beslāfen appears in Middle High German, beslâpen appears in Middle Low German, and beslâpen appears in Middle Dutch. It's conceivable that this word existed in West Germanic with the meaning of "sleep beside, sleep with", and it's possible that it existed in Proto-Germanic too with this simple meaning Leasnam (talk) 03:15, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
