An early usage occurs in the anonymous A Religious Demurrer concerning submission to the present powers (1649):
“to a bicipitous and amphidoxous Government, unless we have two faces, two tongues, two understandings, two judgements, two consciences, two hearts, two pair of hands, two pair of legs…which every honest man hath not, we cannot see how it can be done.” (6)
The pamphlet refuses to acknowledge the legitimacy of the republic after the execution of Charles I.
