A possible additional depth to the meaning of "squeezing blood from a stone"

[edit]

It occurred to me that the image of someone squeezing blood from a stone means the blood is actually coming from the squeezer. This adds an additional depth to the meaning. Not only is it impossible to get the thing you are seeking but you are likely to get hurt in the process and, if you appear to succeed, deeper analysis will show that you actually lost. You must admit that it is a neat way to look at it and may be a subconscious reason the phrase has resonated and survived. 216.209.143.27 14:05, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
