The "black males" sense is certainly not dated, though it may be more frequently seen in the singular these days. It's easier to google up if you spell it "brothas".

I would read Dr. King's usage as the same any Protestant minister would have used, referring to spiritual brothers of a congregation (in this case metaphorically extended to anyone in the civil rights movement).
