Pronunciation[edit]

According to the Wikipedia entry called the same, buoy is homophoneous with boy in British English but not here. How is this now? Ferike333 20:28, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Latin Translation[edit]

Why is the Latin verb "attollo" given as the translation of the noun "buoy"? Caeruleancentaur (talk) 00:33, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of US pronunciation /bui/[edit]

It could be one of three things: 1.) a spelling pronunciation, 2.) an old variant that survived in the US but not in Britain, 3.) a later influence by the Dutch cognate "boei". 1 seems least likely as it fits the spelling just as little as the other form. I personally suspect 3. Is there any info on this? 90.186.170.60 20:50, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
