An article explaining the origin of this term.
[edit]A quick Google search gave me a news article (in Vietnamese) explaining a potential origin of the term "cửu vạn".

According to it, this term came from a card in a Vietnamese card game called "tổ tôm". More details in the article, but the main point is that there was a card in that game called "cửu vạn" (九萬), with an illustration of a porter; therefore, a porter was called a "cửu vạn".
