capitium > cap(ez)zo > cazzo is not plausible phonologically. Stress would have been on the first /i/ of capitium /ka'pitium/ (see Spanish cabeza < capitia), thus the second syllable could never have syncopated to produce */'kaptso/ > /'kattso/.

this etymology is taken from the Vocabolario etimologico della lingua italiana Pianigiani (1907). Another important italian source, the "vocabolario treccani" reports "uncertain etymology". Another etymological dictionary "Vocabolario etimologico italiano Zambaldi (1889)" reports the italian word cazzotto (punch) as derived from capezzotto. --Diuturno 22:52, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
