There is a citation of a very similar word on page 47 of Mayhew, Henry (1851) “Our Street Folk”, in London Labour and the London Poor, volume 3, published 1861, Punch Talk; when describing the "Bona parlare", the language used by Punch and Judy performers in Victorian London: "'Charfering-homa'—talking-man, policeman." Almost certainly linked or an earlier version but I haven't found a reference for that yet. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 12:31, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
