Shouldn't the plural of clevises be clevi? ;-)
- or cleves to be consistent with thesis/theses; axis/axes; emphasis/emphases?
- NO! whereas thesis, axis and emphasis are all Latin words, clevis only looks Latin. Clevis is derived from cleave, which comes from the Old English cleofan.
