The previous explanation seems to be derived from films/movies ("handbrake turn" analogy) without any citations backing it up. I'm pretty sure this is a misleading spin on its original meaning but I've tried to keep my edit short and factual rather than debating this. I tried to add some citations myself but it wouldn't let me, some error about a grease pit or something. If anyone else can add more factual proven historical uses of this phrase and citations it'd be appreciated.
