In the US, every college and accreditor now makes a distinction between extracurricular and co-curricular. These should not be defined as synonyms. Essentially, if it is outside the academic curriculum but learning still occurs, then it is co-curricular. This can range from learning that compliments the academic curriculum as well as life skills - and all of this is usually in service to the broader college mission or divisional missions and goals. In fact, it is difficult to find true "extracurricular" activities any more at colleges; nearly all athletics, clubs, speakers, and etc. have to have some kind of learning goals as part of their DNA as policed by athletic divisions, student life approval protocols, and etc.
