The word decant also exists as a noun. In the sense (1) of the verb as defined overleaf, the noun means a liquid that results from decanting. This is especially used for perfumes and in this context a decant means a sample of perfume. It is also used in the mining industry with regard to ore treatment, where a decant is a liquid from which sediment has been separated by settling it out. Such decants then often need to be disposed of in the environment. In sense (3) of the verb overleaf, the noun means the period during which the occupant of a structure cannot use it due to construction activities. A "decant policy" denotes the attitude of a bulding company with regard to decants in this sense.

Recent health protection agency guidance on managing Norovirus infections in eg hospitals refers to the use of a decant ward to provide a form of quarantine.

I would like to know the derivation of the word. Presumably it has nothing to do with singing.Penglish (talk) 12:54, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The word also has a specific meaning in financial planning. It involves taking all the assets from an existing trust and pouring them into a newly-formed trust. I'll write a good definition and add this sense. Taxman1913 (talk) 18:55, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
