doesn't seem to contribute anything distictive to the language

  • Arguably, this word takes the verb definition of 'effect' and makes it less ambiguous. In fact, if everybody would use 'effectuate' instead of 'effect', we could make the whole effect/affect thing less confusing. As obnoxious as words that end in -ate are (e.g. administrate), this one might actually be useful.
