Yes, this is used in gamer language as epeen. Has the meaning described — This unsigned comment was added by 118.92.206.221 (talk) at 22:08, 28 July 2009.

I can confirm it too, the use is quite widespread and applies mainly in discussions between fans of competing SW or HW, when they degenerate to a "virtual penis size competition", so to speak. — This unsigned comment was added by 151.16.9.165 (talk) at 00:31, 3 September 2011.

More specific usage of the term outside of "internet culture": the motivations of Scene and illicit warez and movie/tv show release groups

[edit]

I randomly looked this term up and found that its broadly used to describe behavior on "message boards". Clearly, this is the dominant meaning given the high usage in this area. However there is another completely unrelated use: a catchall for the motivation behind complicated and risky activity that is performed for free and with little or no method to gain anything of value from the efforts, obviously in the digital sphere. The canonical example of this are the "scene" warez groups and the associated infrastructure (IRC channel operators. website owners/hosters, usenet uploaders, etc.). Why did the people who ripped, cracked, repackaged, and hosted/uploaded/served copyrighted content, illegally in most cases, do this despite receiving no remuneration for their efforts, literally not even "things of value" like free access to peripheral goods or services despite the enormous amount of time and risk involved? The simplest characterization is that they did it as a hobby and for pure reputational benefit. if reputation did not matter, they would not use "monikers" (literally: brand names) with everything from ASCII art to animated CGI graphic art branding. Thus, the term E-Peen is a synthesis of everything I just typed and other information hand wavingly combined together: These groups engaged in these activities to grow their E-peen.67.165.123.62 11:42, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
