I find the derivation of cruciare from "crossing" (don't "cross" me) doubtful. Crucifiction was a form of torture because it involved physically attaching someone to a cross. Eytmology Online, a reliable source that corresponds with my Oxford on other points) lists the derivation as "crux"-"figere" ("attaching" to a "cross").
