小米 xiǎomǐ
[edit]Added 小米 to the list of translations for S. italica. As I understand it, this term applies to the grain, whereas another term applies to the plant. Will look that up to add, but the terms should be tagged appropriately. 小米 may also have a broader application for the multispecies spectrum of millets (it is currently listed as a translation in the article on millet), however my understanding is that it is properly foctail millet. --A12n (talk) 13:33, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Not Echinochloa esculenta
[edit]I believe that User:Leeheonjin's 19 July 2018 addition of Echinochloa esculenta to the translations section is incorrect. If there is no source supporting the use of foxtail millet for that species, I propose deleting it from this entry.
The unique form of the panicle of Setaria italica, seen as resembling the tail of a fox, is what gives rise to this English common name. The panicles of species in the Echinochloa genus are different. The cultivated species in the latter genus are typically called barnyard millet or Japanese millet, altho the nomenclature is a bit confused.--A12n (talk) 18:03, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
