According to the OED, quot. 1764 does not support sense 1, despite often being purported to do so. In fact it shows what is given here as sense 2, and sense 1 is spurious. Etymologically, then, the word comes from GEST n., meaning a gesture, an action, a movement of a limb. 88.12.206.162 14:01, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
