While travelling in Africa, I found out that the Swahili word for "expensive" is "gahli." It occured to me that perhaps the word really came to America via the slave trade. I supposed that white buyers would ask the price of a slave, and the trader would tell him. The buyer would soon learn to say "Expensive!" back to the trader, and negotiations could begin.
