Etymology[edit]

Anglo-Saxon handcops; hand = hand + cosp, cops = fetter. The second part was confused with English "cuffs" or from "hand" and "cuff".

  • This was a combination of the etymologies of two different articles. If anyone would like to clarify, please do. --Bill 09:26, 2005 May 31 (UTC)

Thanks! Someone’s already added it to the (deprecated template usage) handcuffs (plural) article; I’ve cleaned this up and also added it to the (deprecated template usage) handcuff (singular) article.
