Talk:if the shoe fits, wear it

Does the phrase more specifically ( or optionally ) mean, that the listener is being asked to determine if the statement applies to them, or not ; rather than to determine if the statement is generally true, or not ?

e.g. An announcement of, "Too many people are dropping litter, instead of putting it in a bin ; so if the shoe fits, wear it." Each of several listeners is not being asked to determine if they think the statement is true, or not ; but to determine if they are one of the litter-droppers, and if so, to consider themselves instructed to change their behaviour.

I've only heard it ( the "If the cap fits" version ) used by one person, a Manager in about 1980, but maybe they were wrong. GeoffAvogadro (talk) 19:22, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
