the information "from Arabic" is from kamusi.org.

The suggestion that it may be from آفة "lesion" is my own. Not sure if this is correct, but I couldn't find any other Arabic word that would fit. The meaning would then be in origin "lesion, injury", later extended to figurative use of "damage" in general, and hence to "fear of damage", i.e. "threat, terror, horror".
