Definition 2 was changed because it is not factually accurate with respect to the morphology of apocritan Hymenoptera. The propodeum is actually the first abdominal segment, and is not a true part of the thorax. This term is used because this segment forms a unit with the thoracic segments, called the "mesosoma." The "metasoma" includes all abdominal segments except the first, which together form a distinct posterior unit. For a reference, see the book "The Hymenoptera of the World", →ISBN.
