My edit (July 2021)[edit]

I just edited with the following explanation. Latin is about Ancient Rome, which was about people speaking in the streets.. the word then is to describe someone standing up in the streets, and not moving.. as an object that can be purchased. Of course I may be wrong as I never studied Ancient Rome. By the way if I'm correct, then all other linked pages should be corrected which I can't do because they are protected against casual edits like mine.

It's clear to me readers (people who you actually get to meet and speak with when out and about) are let in true ignorance. Here in England where I moved to this hypocrisy is mostly visible.

And so, at the risk of appearing a misogynist, I would add that prostitution is historically female (a male that tried to join would actually face some sort of discrimination) because men were required to work, and as such they used to seek to obtain pure sexual satisfaction/gratification even as superficially as with paid sex (with the money they earned nonetheless). So it's not really a matter of women's rights but about culture (work has never been fun, rather necessary, and safe neither, rather dangerous actually, since the very ancient times and beyond).
