I think the definition given is not correct. 'proto-orthodox' as far as I know refers to one specific group of early Christians; namely those whose beliefs ended up becoming dominant (orthodox). So e.g. Gnostics also existed "before Christianity had agreed upon standards", but they are not considered 'proto-orthodox'. This is at least how Bart Ehrman uses it.
