Isn't there a definition to rival that emphasizes more of a extreme competition between two teams or people? For example the Red Sox vs Yankees being rivals. It seems these definitions don't really accurately describe it in modern terms. When someone says he is my rival, it isn't usual something as simple as being my competitor. A rival usually involves some sort of hatred or bad blood, where as a normal competitor wouldn't have that. CKL121.131.213.155 08:08, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, you're definitely right! I made a small change to emphasise the focus on opposition (and the concentration on the reward). Binglenode 11:56, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
