Etymology

[edit]

I'm going to start by repeating myself, as i did here, and say that i was very surprised to see that a page with such a convuleted history, particulary regarding the etymology, didn't have any entry in the discussion page. As of now, the only mentioned etymology for this word is the unattested and unparalleled *(mala) romana, with various links to several sources confirming that etymology, which, it seems, became the general consensus among Portuguese linguists. However, you'd have to completely bury your head in the sand to not even consider the possibility of Arabic rummān as being the source of the Portuguese word; see here for a more complete discussion on the pros and cons of each etymology. So basicaly all I wanted to say is that both etymologies should be considered as different possibilities for the source of the word, and even tho I consider the official consensual etymology to be rather absurd, as opposed to the arabic one which seems quite obvious, at the end of the day I'm just a random guy with a great interest in linguistics and not a professional linguist, so, my opinion is just that, an opinion. PS: None of the cited sources mention Old Galician romãa, only the Latin hypotetical reconstruction, so, I don't know where that comes from. Sérgio R R Santos (talk) 20:51, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
