Source with the claim![edit]

Since when and from where it is taken that "Sibulavenelane"[1]("The Onion Russians" aka "Russians of the onions" aka "Russians known by growing the onions")[2][3] counts as an slur?

As a local I've always seen them as, how to put it, separate/sovereign ethnic minority from the Russians. Association with the onions originates from that they were well and widely known for growing the onions -- and in actuality the term have carried an element of praise towards their craft.

There has been another case, regional and limited in usage, were Russians indeed have been referred to as "Sibulad"(the Onions, used in place of "the Russians"), and indeed in a pejorative manner/meaning. This one being an development on an influx of the former is certainly a possibility, while separate development in parallel can not be out ruled.

Still, the two are not the same, neither in the meaning nor in the intent nor in the sense:

- "Sibul" - might be used by some certain people as an pejorative ethnic slur towards Russians in general in a slang;

- "Sibulavenelased": which literally translate best as "Russians of the onions" in the meaning and the sense; an archaic/dated term for a subgroup of "the Peipsivenelased" (Russians of the Lake Peipus, with history of many generations in Estonia), which most typically also includes "Vana Usulised"(Russian Old Believers aka Starovary) of the region and whom also have their own language, namely russian dialect(s)[4] of Estonia. The "Peipsivenelased" itself is a subminority of the much more widely covering Estonian-Russians (which itself differs from "the Russians in Estonia" as well as from "Russia's-Russians at Estonia").

Not trusting mine comment, I recommend to consult with:

- a dictionary: https://sonaveeb.ee/search/unif/dlall/dsall/sibulavenelane/1 ; https://www.eki.ee/dict/ekss/index.cgi?Q=sibulavenelane&F=M -- Both of which claim: A dated ethnonym for an onion grower and seller of ethnic Russian descent, living in Estonia near Lake Peipus).
