Without doing research I am not sure of the accuracy of this, but it is my understanding that the term "alimony" used to refer to payment by a former husband to a his former wife for her support. Because of this limiting payment connotation, the term "spousal support" is preferred to indicate that either spouse might be obligated to pay the other (i.e. the former wife may be obligated to pay the former husband). --Stranger 03:24, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
