Talk:statoid
The word "statoid" has not necessarily reached general acceptance. I coined the word in 1998, when I was writing a book about the primary administrative subdivisions of the countries of the world, and needed a single generic term to substitute for the phrase "states, provinces, governorates, departments, regions, etc." Since then, I have maintained a website on that topic, which has gained some prominence (it's the only private website cited in ISO 3166-2:2007). At present, Google returns for "statoid" are mostly references to my book or website. A few of them use the word "statoid" to mean, essentially, a statistical factoid—a statistic of interest but little practical value. I remember that in ~1999, Google returned about five hits for "statoid" with the statistical meaning, and five hits for my site or pointers to it.
For the record, my pronunciation of "statoid" is with a long 'a', like "stay toyed".
By the way, I didn't add the entry for statoid to Wiktionary, but since it's here, I thought this background would be useful.
