Etymology[edit]

Does it come [directly] from Greek indeed?

According to Aleksander Brückner, the word is derived from Strix, Latin for owl and probably the origin of the term Strigoi, ...

Well, z deszczu pod rynnę, e.g. with this even older one:
  1. ^ Miklosich, Franz (1886), “striga”, in  (in German), Vienna: Wilhelm Braumüller, page 326a
with its "das striga/sztrzyga wort came from X, Y into Z" and that's it, but better four sources (some maybe circular) than one.
