Throw Rug - American English?[edit]

I've heard of the term "throw", which is very commonly used as an abbreviation for a "throw blanket". In fact "throw blanket" has almost been completely replaced by its abbreviated form, using "throw blanket" instead of just "throw" sounds unnecessarily formal. But, I have never heard of a "throw rug". Is "throw rug" just used in American English, or is it a recent, and quite logical, adaptation of the abbreviation "throw"?
