Is σταφύλια singular or plural?

Question

WHY is Uva not spelled Vua and pronounced "OOWAH"? V and W have the same sound, in fact why not spell it as Va? Can any Latin expert help me out?

The Roman alphabet did not include a letter W. The practice of spelling is chosen to represent the pronunciation, not the other way round. That is, it is spelled that way based on the pronunciation. --EncycloPetey 02:31, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
