etymology of Latin verpa[edit]

What are the sources of these etymologies?

They do not appear in any standard handbooks or etymological dictionaries of Indo-European, and they seem arbitrary and without foundation to me.

For an overview of etymologies of verpa and verpus, see now: Thomas Steer (2018) “Lateinisch uerpa und uerpus”, pages 159–176 in Priscis Libentius et Liberius Novis. Indogermanische und sprachwissenschaftliche Studien. Festschrift für Gerhard Meiser zum 65. Geburtstag, ed. Olav Hackstein, Andreas Opfermann, Harald Bichlmeier & Sabine Häusler.

Tangentially, the etymology for Lithuanian varpa "ear of grain, penis' in the Wiktionary should be reviewed in conjuction with this etymology. Mardinli Deli (talk) 19:54, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
