"volante" appears in the English subtitles to director Matt Tyrnauer's "Valentino: The Last Emperor" (2008). The speaker is an Italian haute couture designer; it appeared to me that he was using the term to refer to an ornamental part of a woman's garment, positioned over the shoulder joint.
