I stumbled on wool-gathering in a crossword puzzle with the clue "daydreamers gather it" - I figured out the answer was "wool", but could not figure out why!!! I had never heard it before so I looked up the etymology and apparently it goes way back to the middle 16th century. The reference is to gathering fragments of wool torn from sheep by bushes, etc. - I'm not sure why a daydreamer would be doing this, but like many idioms, I guess you had to be there in order for it to make sense.
