IPA of /jakmak/[edit]

I am surprised as to why the IPA of /jakmak/ surfaces as [jək'mac], which is not at all what this word sounds like. If someone were to ask me to write [jək'mac] in Turkish, I would come up with something akin to “yıkmâk”.

Briefly put, 1) why is the unstressed /a/ reduced to [ə]? 2) why is the /k/ palatalised to [c]?

Just a heads-up that, after consulting other linguist colleagues who know more of Turkish phonology (as a native speaker, one can never be too sure of one’s own judgement), I am changing the IPA to [jak'mak]. Konanen (talk) 18:50, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
