Usage[edit]

This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections, and on talk pages, to cite The Jargon File website.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following positional or named parameters:

  • |1= or |entry= – the name of The Jargon File entry to be cited. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry.
  • |2= or |url= – the template should be able to automatically create a link to The Jargon File website. However, if the default URL is not linking to the correct webpage, use this parameter to specify the URL of the webpage to be linked to. You may either provide the full URL, or the part between html/ and the file extension (.html).
  • |archiveurl= – instead of using |2= or |url=, |archiveurl= can be used to specify the URL of a webpage archived at the Internet Archive.
  • |3= or |accessdate= – The date on which The Jargon File webpage was accessed. Use either of these date formats: 1 January 2017 or January 1, 2017.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the webpage.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.

Examples[edit]

  • Wikitext: {{R:Jargon File|entry=/dev/null|url=http://catb.org/esr/jargon/html/0/dev-null.html|accessdate=1 January 2017|passage=A notional 'black hole' in any information space being discussed, used, or referred to.|nodot=yes}}
