Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in "References" sections and on talk pages to cite John Camden Hotten's works A Dictionary of Modern Slang, Cant, and Vulgar Words (1st edition, 1859), and a subsequent version entitled The Slang Dictionary; or, The Vulgar Words, Street Phrases, and Fast Expressions of High and Low Society (1864). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the works at Google Books at the Internet Archive:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |year=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 1864 version, specify |year=1864. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1859).
  • |chapter= – if not quoting from the dictionary, the name of the chapter quoted from.
  • |1= or |entry= – if quoting from the dictionary, the name of the entry. If this is not specified, the template uses the name of the Wikipedia entry.
  • |noformat= – the template capitalizes the entry name as indicated in the works. To override this formatting with some other wikitext markup, use |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
