Usage

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Philemon Holland's English translation (the first thereof) of Livy's work Ab Urbe Condita Libri entitled The Romane Historie (1st edition, 1600; and 1659 version). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

• 1st edition (1600).
• 1659 version.

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |year= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 1659 version, specify |year=1659. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1600).
• |author= – at the starts of Books I–XLV in the main part of the work, there is a "breviary" or summary of the book written by Lucius Annaeus Florus. The remainder of the books (XLVI–CXL) are lost, and only Florus's breviaries exist. If quoting from these breviaries, specify |author=Florus.
• |1= or |book= – mandatory: the book number quoted from in either Arabic or Roman numerals.
• |part= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the following parts of the work indicated in the second column of the following table, specify the parameter value as indicated in the first column:

As "To the Reader" is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/bim_early-english-books-1641-1700_the-romane-historie-writ_livius-titus_1600/page/n4/mode/1up specify |page=4. ("Ad Anglicam" and the epistle dedicatory are also unpaginated, but the template is able to determine the webpage to link to.)

• |chapter= – the part of the work entitled "A Summarie Collected by Iohn Bartholomew Marlianus, […], Touching the Topographie of Rome in Ancient Time" is divided into books and chapters. Use this parameter to specify the chapter number in uppercase Roman numerals and the name of the chapter in parentheses, like this: |chapter=I (The Situation of the City).
• |entry= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the glossary entitled "A Second Index, Containing the Exposition of Those Tearmes in Livie which are not yet Familiar in English, and of Some Places, Omitted before in the Marginal Notes", use this parameter to specify the entry name.
• |column= or |columns= – if quoting from part of the work divided into columns, use this parameter to specify the column number quoted from in Arabic numerals, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or use an en dash between the column numbers, like this: |columns=1–2.
• |2= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

You must specify this information to have the template link to the online version of the work.

In the 1st edition, if quoting from "To the Reader" after "The Topographie of Rome", specify the page number as |page=1404.

• |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
