Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote A Compleat Collection of State-Tryals (1st edition, 1719–1730, 6 volumes), edited by Thomas Salmon. It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=VI.
  • |part= – if quoting from the Appendix in volume VI, specify |part=Appendix.
  • |2= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from the Case of Ship-Money in volume II, which has a separate title page, specify |chapter=Ship-Money.
  • |date= or |year= – the date or year of the trial referred to. If a full date is specified, the template converts it from a date in the Julian calendar to one in the Gregorian calendar.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified for the template to link to an online version of the work. Also note the following:
  • In volume II, there are no page numbers 164–191, though the text is complete. The pagination restarts from 1 in the report of the Case of Ship-Money.
  • In volume VI, the pagination restarts from 1 in the Appendix.
  • |column= and |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from. When quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the book.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
