Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Nicholas Udall's work Ralph Roister Doister (1st edition, 1566?); the 1st edition, of which there is only one copy at Eton College, is not currently available online. It can be used to create a link to an online version of an 1869 republication of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from a chapter indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result First page number
Bibliography Bibliography (by Edward Arber) page 8
Introduction Introduction (by Arber) page 5
The Prologue The Prologue page 10
Certaine Songs Certaine Songs to be Song by Those which shall Use this Comedie or Enterlude page 86
Life A Brief Note of the Life, Works, and Times of Nicholas Udall, [] (by Arber) page 3
  • |subchapter= – if quoting from one of the songs in "Certaine Songs", the name of the song.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the act number (I–V) and scene number quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |scene=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the scene number quoted from. If the template is unable to do so, this parameter must be used to manually specify the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals, for example, |scene=i.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment about the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
